Jean Valjean. The man that we learned to be the actual protagonist of the story and not the bishop. He was a freed prisoner who has been traveling and ended up arriving at a town with hopes that he’d be able to find at least someone that would help him. Unfortunately, he was unwelcomed by everyone as they all somehow figured out who he was. He was kicked out from inns and were threatened to have him shot if he didn’t leave. He had nowhere to go with no shelter, food, or water. Until in the end, finally a “good woman” was kind enough to help him in a way and instructed him to knock on the bishops door and hopefully find his help there.
