Here, we learn more about Jean's background information and where he comes from. We found out how Jean had to go to jail for years just for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his family. You can't blame him really. It seems that at times like those, that was the only option. Jean lost many members of his family and is basically alone at this point. The reason for the constant bad attitude is probably due to his traumatic experiences. Hopefully now with the bishop, he could start anew.
