Les Mis Today

One connection between the book “Les Misérables” and modern time in America, today is how up until now, inequality still remains between wealthy and low/middle-class citizens. Like in the story, majority of the time, the rich remain as selfish people that only cares about themselves and their money. An example would be when the bishop encountered an aristocrat who chose to keep his money for himself, rather than to do a good deed and share his money to the poor or just people who really needed money in general. This reflects with the modern time today as how many millionaires/billionaires choose on keeping their money instead of helping others, just like how the aristocrat was. Another were their laws, such as the death penalty that still remains today. In the book, it speaks about a man that was sentenced to death for a crime he committed. Unfortunately, this law still is still on-going up to today. Recently, many of us have heard about the execution of the man named Brandon Bernard. Many have fought to save his life that was still sadly taken away by the government. For most cases, guilty of not, I partly agree with the bishop and that people should not have the ability to ever kill another human being for the crimes they commit. It’s a shame how people are being killed this way, hopefully things could change soon. For the last connection, is pretty much just society and the people around us. The people around the bishop seemed to have been blinded with hatred and judgement towards the bishop regardless all the good deeds he have done. This is also very much comparable with how people treats each other in today’s society. These days, it’s easy for others to judge someone else for either their physical appearance, rumors that they’ve heard about this specific person, and for whatever other reason there is. It’s quite disappointing, really. But hopefully soon we’ll be able to see a positive change.
